DESCRIPTION:Rallying in Solidarity for Equity (RISE)\, the SNG Health Equity event is back again for another year. This event will provide hot food\, a health resource fair with information on local organizations\, a clothing drive\, daily care resources and warm smiles from organizers. This event is aimed at increasing resources\, direct services and networks for the unhoused population of South Minneapolis. This is the fourth year of this event and we hope to expand the reach of this event by increasing partnerships (the role of organizers)\, but also by having more volunteers. \nWe’re looking for volunteers to help our Health Equity Event for our unhoused neighbors run smoothly! Shifts are just 1 to 2 hours\, and your support will make a big impact. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a special community celebration and dedication of the public artwork at Wadaag Commons. \nFeaturing more than $500\,000 in permanent artwork\, this represents one of the largest investments in culturally grounded public art in the Seward neighborhood. The building also features what may be Minneapolis’ most visible Islamic-inspired public art. \nThe artwork was created by Twin Cities artists and reflects East African and Islamic artistic traditions through a community-centered vision grounded in the belief that “Home is Sacred.” In the face of increased anti-immigrant rhetoric and immigration enforcement in Minnesota\, this project represents a permanent and highly-visible public affirmation of belonging\, dignity\, and cultural pride. Together\, these pieces help tell a story about who belongs here and what it means to feel at home. \nThe program will include remarks from project partners\, recognition of participating artists and contributors\, opportunities to experience the completed artwork\, and time to connect with community members and guests. SUMMARY:Story Quilt Re-Hanging
DESCRIPTION:Earlier this century\, residents of Seward Tower West along with others in the neighborhood crafted a Story Quilt focusing on their journeys to the Seward Towers. Each woman created two storytelling quilt blocks using silk screened photos from their lives. It also served as a more effective way for English language learning than a formal classroom and provided white retired-elders in the neighborhood who were lonely to have company. It allowed for rich cross-cultural understanding.  \nThe quilt was shown in the May 2006 “Stories in the Cloth” show at the Textile Center. It was created in 2004 in a series of workshops led by Doroth Mayer and photographed by Dawn Vogel. \nDuring the major renovation of the Seward Towers West Community Room several years ago\, the quilt was taken down for safe keeping. DESCRIPTION:Join Seward Neighborhood Group for a family-friendly neighborhood celebration in Matthews Park! \n1-3 PM \nWe will plan to be outside of Matthews Rec Center with meet & greet opportunities to learn about local organizations\, and SNG’s own committees. Always thought about joining a committee\, but didn’t know how to participate? Come meet our Community Engagement\, Community Development\, Environment\, and History Committees! Leave with an SNG shirt or tote bag for the price of a sliding scale donation to SNG. We will also be selling copies of the “People’s History of Seward” for $25\, via cash\, check\, or Venmo inside the Rec Center. \nOn the four-square court we will be hosting a Garden Tool Swap. Plants\, trimmings\, seeds\, leftover soil are all welcome! All remaining items will be donated to local groups with gardening programs. \nOver by the wading pool\, we will have live performances by local music groups\, and a dance workshop from the Somali Museum. Bring a lawn chair and hangout with an ice cream sandwich! \nWe have prepared a scavenger hunt for Matthews Park\, with prizes being temporary tattoos! The Rec Center will provide sports equipment for neighbors to organize their own pick-up activities. \nInside the Rec Center we will have a silent auction\, featuring prizes from local artists and businesses\, with bidding closing at 3pm. Use this link to view our silent auction. \nStarting at 3 PM \nWe will move inside for SNG’s Annual Meeting. Committees will briefly share the successes of Seward Neighborhood Group over the past year and announce winners of Seward’s Small Grants Program. The annual meeting will conclude with electing new members to the Board of Directors. On SATURDAY\, April 25\, 10am-Noon. \nWe will be meeting on Franklin Avenue\, next to Code Blu Coffee and Zipps Liquor before splitting off into small groups to pick up trash. Help us keep our neighborhood clean to protect our beautiful waterways! Bring a friend\, neighbor\, or family member! Free coffee and children’s beverages for participants. \nWe will provide safety vests\, trash grabbers\, and burlap bags from Peace Coffee. \nItems to bring with you: gloves\, water bottle\, sunscreen\, and anything else you might need! \n  \nPlease note – this will serve as the April Environment Committee meeting; we will NOT have a meeting on 4/23.
