SUMMARY:Story Quilt Re-Hanging
DESCRIPTION:Earlier this century\, residents of Seward Tower West along with others in the neighborhood crafted a Story Quilt focusing on their journeys to the Seward Towers. Each woman created two storytelling quilt blocks using silk screened photos from their lives. It also served as a more effective way for English language learning than a formal classroom and provided white retired-elders in the neighborhood who were lonely to have company. It allowed for rich cross-cultural understanding.  \nThe quilt was shown in the May 2006 “Stories in the Cloth” show at the Textile Center. It was created in 2004 in a series of workshops led by Doroth Mayer and photographed by Dawn Vogel. \nDuring the major renovation of the Seward Towers West Community Room several years ago\, the quilt was taken down for safe keeping. It’s time to return the Quilt to the West Community Room.  \nJoin us for a celebration of Seward’s Cross-Cultural History in the Community Room at Seward Towers West.  \nPlease email andersdiann@gmail.com for questions about the event.

SUMMARY:Monarca Democracy Defense Training
DESCRIPTION:Neighborhood-based training located in Seward\, Minneapolis\n\nThe exact location will be shared in the confirmation email after you register through Monarca’s website:\n  \n“We have lived through the largest federal immigration operation in US history. We have been tried\, tested\, and we have shown the world that we\, the people\, still have the power we need to defend and expand our American democracy. \nOur elections on November 3rd are an essential part of that defense. Election integrity is under unprecedented attack. People in the highest levels of government have called to nationalize elections\, tried to seize voter rolls from our state officials\, and threatened federal agents at polling places. \nJoin Monarca and your neighbors for our new Democracy Defense training. Together\, we will build a broad network to defend our democracy\, using every lever we can to ensure we have safe\, free\, and fair elections\, and that our votes are counted. \nIn this training\, you will learn more about: \n\nThe threats we are facing\nThe actions we can take\, now\, up to the election\, and beyond\nHow to organize locally to build democracy defense networks\, building on what we already have\nNext steps to stay engaged with the work\n\nThe training focuses on local organizing\, including an intentional planning period to work alongside your neighbors. If you are coming from outside the area\, we are excited to see you\, and we think you’ll get the most from the event if you can attend with 2-3 people from your neighborhood\, as well as connect with us afterwards to plan a training for your area.” \n  \nThis event is hosted by Monarca. Seward Neighborhood Group is sharing this on our website for communication purposes only. Please contact Monarca for all questions at trainings@monarcamn.org.

SUMMARY:36th ART - Brackett Park Rocket Lighting Event
DESCRIPTION:36th ART is hosting a Brackett Park Rocket Lighting event during the Greenway Glow Festival in conjunction with the 3rd annual yarnbombing of the fence atop the bridge\, led by Jack Becker. \nWe are seeking artists to help illuminate the rocket in a variety of fun and entertaining ways\, including multi-colored projections\, LED string light programming\, and a youth-orchestrated flashlight flash mob\, accompanied by dramatic lift-off sound effects and billowing steam. Imagine the Brackett Rocket “taking off” while a circle of community youths—using colored gels over their flashlights—simulate a fiery lift-off! \nStipends will be offered to 2-3 selected artists for short programs of 10-15 minutes. The deadline for submitting Letters Of Interest is July 15. Please email beckerjack54@gmail.com for more details. \nPlans call for a community potluck picnic\, a bonfire\, live music\, and lawn games (permit pending). Special guests will include Randy Walker\, the artist who created the sculpture “Return Journey” in 2007 using the original rocket ship that stood for decades in the playground. Stay tuned for details! \nPlease contact bobbie.erichsen@gmail.com for questions about the event.
