SUMMARY:Story Quilt Re-Hanging
DESCRIPTION:Earlier this century\, residents of Seward Tower West along with others in the neighborhood crafted a Story Quilt focusing on their journeys to the Seward Towers. Each woman created two storytelling quilt blocks using silk screened photos from their lives. It also served as a more effective way for English language learning than a formal classroom and provided white retired-elders in the neighborhood who were lonely to have company. It allowed for rich cross-cultural understanding.  \nThe quilt was shown in the May 2006 “Stories in the Cloth” show at the Textile Center. It was created in 2004 in a series of workshops led by Doroth Mayer and photographed by Dawn Vogel. \nDuring the major renovation of the Seward Towers West Community Room several years ago\, the quilt was taken down for safe keeping. Always thought about joining a committee\, but didn’t know how to participate? Come meet our Community Engagement\, Community Development\, Environment\, and History Committees! Leave with an SNG shirt or tote bag for the price of a sliding scale donation to SNG. We will also be selling copies of the “People’s History of Seward” for $25\, via cash\, check\, or Venmo inside the Rec Center. \nOn the four-square court we will be hosting a Garden Tool Swap. Plants\, trimmings\, seeds\, leftover soil are all welcome! All remaining items will be donated to local groups with gardening programs. \nOver by the wading pool\, we will have live performances by local music groups\, and a dance workshop from the Somali Museum. Bring a lawn chair and hangout with an ice cream sandwich! \nWe have prepared a scavenger hunt for Matthews Park\, with prizes being temporary tattoos! The Rec Center will provide sports equipment for neighbors to organize their own pick-up activities. \nInside the Rec Center we will have a silent auction\, featuring prizes from local artists and businesses\, with bidding closing at 3pm. DESCRIPTION:36th ART (Avenue Revitalization & Transformation)\, a resident-led community improvement initiative in South Minneapolis\, is deepening its partnership with the Hiawatha Collegiate High School to present Bridging Cultures\, a bridge mural paint-a-thon culminating in a free community cultural festival on Sunday\, Sept. 15 from 1-5 pm.\n\nBuilding on the success of the two wall murals Hiawatha students created under the 36th Avenue Greenway bridge last year with help from a team of local muralists—entitled River Memory—the partners now plan to creatively complete the transformation of the aging\, unwelcoming structure with help from City Mischief Murals\, a talented group of multicultural artists led by Indigenous culture bearer Thomasina TopBear.\n\n\n“My approach to art making derives from my Oceti Sakowin culture and values\, while using art to express thoughts on social justice\, spirituality and togetherness. I’m very excited to be a part of this special event because of the large amount of community collaboration that is going into making this project a reality! I hope this mural encourages the neighborhood residents and visitors to pause for a moment or slow down to reflect on the beauty of this place.”\n– Thomasina TopBear\, lead muralist\n\n\nIn addition to colorfully painting all of the remaining concrete surfaces of the bridge—over a 48-hour period—36th ART and the school are hosting a community-building cultural festival near the bridge\, in the parking lot behind the school\, coinciding with the start of Hispanic Heritage Month. The school is located at 3500 East 28th Street in South Minneapolis.\n\n\n“This project is an inspiring reminder that\, through meaningful partnerships and a group of committed individuals\, we can make a big difference in the lives of our youth and our community.”\n– Jack Becker\, 36th ART member and Bridging Cultures project manager\n\nBridging Cultures will commence Sunday at 1 p.m. and culminate at 5 p.m. with the unveiling of the newly transformed bridge. The festival will be produced by the renowned nonprofit Indigenous Roots. The festival is designed to bring Hiawatha students and their families together with Seward and Longfellow neighbors for an afternoon of cultural presentations\, food\, fashion\, music\, dance\, stencil-making and much more.\n\nLeaders at the school\, which opened its doors six years ago\, are excited to build deeper relationships with its Seward and Longfellow neighbors and grow broader community understanding and appreciation for the many facets of Latinx cultures housed in the school.
