SUMMARY:Earth Day River Clean Up
DESCRIPTION:Taking place just off of West River Parkway\, this cleanup is an Earth Day tradition in the Minneapolis River Gorge. People come from throughout the local river corridor\, neighborhoods and metro area – individuals\, families\, small church\, corporate and student or scout groups – to celebrate Earth Day and contribute to the health and vitality of the Mississippi River. All are welcome! This is a family-friendly event providing an excellent opportunity to get outside and work together to help improve this treasured area. We’ve returned to this site year after year and have noticed a dramatic improvement to the area thanks to dedicated volunteers like you! \nTo participate\, show up at 9:30 a.m. at either location (East 36th Street & West River Parkway or East 44th Street & West River Parkway) to sign in with FMR staff. We’ll provide all the supplies\, but feel free to wear your own gloves if you have them. Sturdy shoes and dressing in layers for the weather are strongly suggested. There will pizza from Parkway Pizza and snacks for those volunteering. \nOur two locations for this cleanup are paved parking lots\, with easy access to paved and unpaved trails. Volunteers are encouraged to spread out and work wherever they feel comfortable. Paths are shared by walkers and bikers\, but volunteers can spend their entire cleanup on flat\, paved trails. Volunteers also have the option to stick to sidewalks and city streets. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAdvance registration for this event is not required for individuals or for groups of 10 or fewer. \nIf you have a group of 10-20 people\, please contact FMR’s Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator at volunteer@fmr.org(link sends e-mail) or 651.222.2193 x27. We’ll work with you to determine which cleanup site is a better fit for your group. \nFor groups of 20 or more\, please contact Kristina Anderson\, kanderson@minneapolisparks.org(link sends e-mail) to be assigned a location that will better fit your group size. \nThis event is supported by the Longfellow Community Council; Longfellow/Seward area residents are encouraged to attend. The event is also part of the Friends of the Mississippi River Gorge Stewards program\, actively engaging community members throughout the Twin Cities in the stewardship of the Mississippi River Gorge.

SUMMARY:Seward Longfellow Restorative Justice Fundraising Concert with Maria Isa
DESCRIPTION:Seward Longfellow Restorative Justice is hosting a fundraiser with a performance by Maria Isa & the Drums at Hook and Ladder (3010 Minnehaha Ave S.\, Minneapolis\, MN 55406) on Thursday\, May 4th. This concert will launch the Hook and Ladder’s annual\, award-winning Under the Canopy series. \nThis outdoor concert is 21+ and tickets are $25 in advance or $35 at the door. Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit SLRJ. There will be a food truck on site for the duration of the show and free ice cream provided by Minnehaha Scoop. \nSeward Longfellow Restorative Justice was founded by neighborhood residents in 2004 to work with youth cited for breaking the law in order to help them learn from their mistakes and make amends. SLRJ uses a restorative conference process that includes preparation with both parties and culminates in a conversation about what happened\, how it caused harm\, and the creation of a plan to “make things right”. SLRJ has also contributed to many important legal system reforms to transform how mistakes by youth are treated\, that is\, to move away from a punishment model to one that treats “youthful behavior” as opportunities for learning and making amends. \nSLRJ is experiencing an increase in requests from community members who are seeking alternatives to the police and legal system response to harm and crime. Proceeds from the concert will allow SLRJ to continue to offer resources and support to each person requesting a restorative process and to continue to advocate for legal system changes including the recently introduced bill in the MN House which would increase RJ options for youth statewide. \nMaria Isa Perez-Hedges is a Boricua singer\, songwriter\, actress\, rapper\, activist\, youth worker and international recording artist. She has performed alongside and opened for artists such as The Roots\, Bad Bunny\, Common\, Moby\, Bomba Estereo\, Sheila E\, Kendrick Lamar\, Wu Tang Clan\, Las Cafeteras\, Atmosphere\, Pedrito Martinez\, and many more. She is the founder\, producer\, and co-host for Latina Theory: Spanglish Podcast. She is also a MN State Representative for District 65B. \nFor more information or to donate directly to SLRJ on their website\, visit slrj.org. \nThe Hook and Ladder Under the Canopy Series is supported by: Jack Daniels\, Summit Brewing\, Slane Irish Whiskey\, KFAI – Fresh Air Community Radio\, Mpls / St Paul Magazine\, Nobool Presents\, Arbeiter Brewing\, Moon Palace Books\, The Hub Bike Co-Op\, The Hive Realty\, Lake Street Council\, & The MN State Arts Board \nAdditional support for this event provided by Seward Co-op.
