History Committee
The mission of the History Committee is to collect, research, and interpret stories and historical events related to the Seward Neighborhood and to share them with the public for purpose of education.
What we work on together
The History Committee has been active since 1997, collecting and archiving information on the history of the Seward Neighborhood. They have conducted neighborhood talks and walks, commissioned plays, and produced unique events based on the history of Seward. Their belief is that shared history and sense of space can help build community.
Research
Ongoing research of historical buildings and events in Seward to learn and share what they tell us about the growth and development of our neighborhood.
Storytelling
Creating opportunities to collect and share stories from Seward’s history through newsletters, website, or blogs.
Special Events
Continuing to create special events in the neighborhood to bring people together to hear and share stories from Seward’s history through walks, talks, slide presentations, photos, and discussions.

This History Committee is primarily a work group that conducts research and documents Seward History. The committee is open to all Sewardites.

You will want a copy of the award-winning book published by the Seward History Committee in 2018, “A People’s History of the Seward Neighborhood.” To purchase a copy of the book locally go to: Smart Set Community Printing, M-F 8am to 5pm, at 2521 24th Avenue South. The cost is $25.00. Alternatively, you can check out a copy at most Hennepin County Libraries.
Join us for a Meeting
The History Committee meets in-person on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 4:00 pm at Matthews Center in the craft room. All are welcome to attend.

Learn About Seward History
The committee has donated 43 boxes of their collected materials on the history of Seward to the Hennepin County Library archives since 2010. The Seward Neighborhood Group Records collection is available to all by contacting HCLIB Special Collections staff at specialcoll@hclib.org or 612-543-8200.

Environment Committee
The Environment Committee is a great way to build community and create hope. Get to know neighbors and do something, even something small, to protect and improve our natural environment. Together, we can take small steps, on our way to the changes we need.
Community Development Committee
Ensures that Seward’s built environment—housing, commercial and industrial buildings, utilities, parks, roads, bikeways, transit, the pedestrian environment—is safe, improving, serves all residents, owners and workers, and is well-maintained and environmentally sustainable.
